How-To: Combat Writer's Block

Writer’s block, or a block from any type of creative activity, can seem in the moment to last forever. It can be the most frustrating feeling to be completely stunted in your mind when all you desperately want to do is create. Although it may seem like there's no way out of it, there are actually some steps that anyone can take in order to combat and push through writer’s block.

Many people who need to be creative experience some type of writer’s block. The causes can vary, but common ones include timing (it’s simply not the right time to create), fear (struggling with putting your art and ideas out there for fear of being critiqued), and perfectionism (trying to get everything perfect in your mind before putting anything down in physical form).

Although it is hard to turn these worries and innate human emotions off, there are some universal tips and steps you can take to help push through these blocks.

  1. Go for a walk. Sometimes a change of scenery and fresh air is all you need to clear your mind and get those creative juices flowing. A peaceful walk can allow you to let your mind wander and hopefully stumble back into the inventive headspace in which you’re wishing to be.

  2. Eliminate distractions. Whether it’s distracting people or noisy devices, distance yourself from those aspects and find a distraction-free environment to allow yourself to fully commit to the task at hand.

  3. Play. Do something calming, like play with Legos or do a puzzle, in order to get your mind free of the stress of writer’s block and make a headspace open for new and original ideas.

  4. Freewrite. For those who are trying to write, attempt a laid-back freewrite with no expectations or stress attached to it. This will help loosen your mind and get you back into writing without feeing too stressed or anxious to do it.

  5. Take a shower. Stepping away from your creative area and getting into the shower is a great way to open up your thoughts. Doing a mindless task like showering takes up no real concentration, which gives your brain room and time to brainstorm ideas in peace.

These tips are useful for any type of artistic outlet that one wants to be free to create. Follow some (or all) of these steps and you will be out of that block and back to being imaginative in no time!
